The Enduring Magic of Paintings

Kalagya Arts is dedicated to preserving this exceptional art form and ensuring its appreciation by a global audience. We champion the work of skilled artisans, ensuring the traditional techniques and heritage behind these paintings are not lost.

Wasli paper’s magic lies in its natural excellence. Acid-free and resistant to insects, it ensures the paintings’ longevity. By using Wasli paper, artists artworks could be admired for generations to come. While Wasli paper is a preferred choice, cotton, silk, and canvas are also used for creating beautiful paintings.

Vibrant colors, extracted from nature (lapis lazuli or Indigo for blue, orpiment from sulfide mineral for yellow, Chandresh for red, Zinc oxide for white, malachite for green, carbon or charcoal for black), shine on the absorbent Wasli surface.

The Art of Creation: A Step-by-Step Journey

The creation of a painting is a meticulous process, demanding a steady hand and a keen eye for detail:

  • Sketching the Foundation: The artist meticulously sketched the outline of the scene or figure on the prepared Wasli paper using a light-colored pigment.
  • Color Application: The painting progressed from background to foreground. Lighter base colors were applied first, followed by layering and detailing with progressively darker shades. The natural absorbency of Wasli paper allowed for a beautiful gradation of color.
  • Gold Work: Finely crushed gold leaves or gold paint were often used to embellish the borders, jewelry, or attire in figures, adding a touch of opulence.
  • Subjects: are courtly life, hunting scenes, and literary epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, colorful devotional paintings of Shrinathji, realistic birds and animals, life size portraits and subjects as per client’s preference.
